Capture the warm, glowing energy of a serene lakeside sunset. This tutorial focuses on creating a radiant light source, mirroring those colors in the water, and framing the scene with rich, autumnal trees.
Materials Needed:
- Canvas: 11×14″ or your preferred landscape size.
- Colors: White, Bright Yellow, Indian Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Vandyke Brown, Magenta Red, Bright Red, and Black.
- URArtStudio Brushes:
- 2″ Big Oval Brush: For initial color placement.
- Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush: For smoothing the sky and creating water reflections.
- The Hedgehog Stipple Brush: For textural foliage and distant shrubbery.
- Variety Set Flat Brush: For tree trunks and fence details.
- Fan Brush: For grass and highlighting trees.
- The Detailer Brush: For fine branches and magical sparkles.
- Painting Knife: For sharp water lines.
Step 1: The Radiant Center
Start by applying a horizontal strip of thick White paint across the center of the canvas using the 2″ Big Oval Brush. Immediately add Bright Yellow above and below the white, blending slightly to create a glowing horizon line.
Step 2: Layering the Sunset Sky
Continuing with the 2″ Big Oval Brush, add horizontal bands of Indian Yellow, then Burnt Sienna, as you move toward the top and bottom edges. Finish the edges with a touch of Vandyke Brown.
Step 3: Atmospheric Blending
Take the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush and lightly sweep horizontally across the sky and the water area. This softens the transitions between colors, creating a hazy, sun-drenched atmosphere and the foundation for the lake’s surface.
Step 4: Distant Shore and Water Lines
Use a Painting Knife with a small amount of White and Yellow to pull thin, horizontal lines across the center. These represent the distant shoreline and light catching on the water. Use the Hedgehog Brush with a dark mixture to dab a faint, distant tree line along this horizon.
Step 5: Foreground Frame and Tree Trunks
Apply Black and Vandyke Brown to the bottom corners to ground the scene. Switch to a Flat Brush from the variety set and paint two main tree trunksโone on the far left and one on the right. Give them organic curves and varying thicknesses.
Step 6: Autumnal Foliage Dabbing
Load The Hedgehog Brush with a mix of Magenta Red and Bright Red. Dab dense leaf clusters onto the branches of your main trees. Concentrate the darker reds near the trunk and use a touch of Yellow or White on the edges to show light hitting the leaves.
Step 7: The Rustic Fence
Using a small Flat Brush, paint a simple, weathered wooden fence in the foreground. Use Vandyke Brown for the posts and rails, then add a thin White highlight on the side facing the sun to make them pop against the dark ground.

Use the Fan Brush with a mix of Green (Yellow + Brown) and Sienna to pull upward-flicking strokes at the base of the trees and fence. This creates a natural grassy texture. Use The Detailer Brush to add fine, wispy branches reaching into the sunset.
Step 9: Magical Water Sparkles
This final detail brings the painting to life. Dip The Detailer Brush in thin White paint and add tiny, bright dots on the waterโs surface where the sun is brightest. Add small cross-shaped highlights (+) to the most vibrant dots to simulate a shimmering, sparkling effect.
Step 10: Signing Your Work
Sign your name in the corner using The Detailer Brush and a light color that stands out against your foreground.
Artist Tip: When blending reflections with the Ultra Soft Blender Brush, always use horizontal strokes. This maintains the “flat” look of the waterโs surface while mirroring the vertical colors of the sky.
