COLORS: black, white, magenta red, bright red, lavender, vandyke brown, burnt sienna, mid yellow
Before You Begin
- Prep Your Canvas: Dampen your canvas with clean water using a big soft brush or a mister. This helps acrylics stay workable and makes blending easier.
- Pre-moisten Your Palette: Use a water sprayer or lightly damp paper towel beneath your paint blobs to keep your acrylics from drying too fast.
- Keep Tools Ready: Gather a 4โ square brush, large oval brush, filbert brush, detailed square and round brushes, ultra-soft blending brush, palette knife, liner brush, and clean towels for wiping.
Essential Painting Tools
- 4โ Square Brush โ For large area coverage and blending backgrounds.
- Large Oval Brush โ Useful for soft blending and creating smooth transitions.
- Filbert Brush โ Great for softer edges and blending landforms and highlights.
- Detail Square Brush โ For adding precise highlights, details, and cloudwork.
- Round Brush โ Perfect for painting tree silhouettes and organic shapes.
- Ultra-Soft Blending Brush โ For final blending and smoothing out brush strokes.
- Palette Knife โ Ideal for adding sparkling effects and creating crisp edges, especially in the water.
- Liner Brush โ Best for detailing, such as thin grass and finishing sparkles.
- Clean Towels or Paper Towels โ For wiping brushes and removing excess moisture or paint during blending.
Be sure to also have a water container for rinsing brushes and a palette for mixing your paints. Happy Painting!
- Miscellaneous:
- Palette (for mixing paints).
- Water container (for rinsing brushes).
- Paper towels (for wiping excess paint).
- Hairdryer or heat gun (optional, for speeding up drying).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Mystical Red Forest: Step-by-Step Painting Guide
Step into a world of vibrant color and ethereal light. This tutorial explores the “tunnel effect” composition, using deep reds and blacks to frame a glowing central portal, finished with magical sparkling details.
Materials Needed:
- Canvas: 12×12″ (or your preferred square size).
- Colors: Black, Vandyke Brown, Burnt Sienna, Magenta Red, Bright Red, Lavender, and White.
- UR Art Studio Brushes:
- 2″ Big Oval Brush: For initial color blocking.
- Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush: For smoothing the atmospheric glow and mist.
- Round Brush / The Hedgehog: For dabbing vibrant foliage and clouds.
- Variety Set Flat Brush: For the tree trunk and the central path.
- The Detailer Brush: For fine branches and magical sparkles.
Step 1: Establishing the Color Portal
Load the 2″ Big Oval Brush with Bright Red and Magenta. Starting in the center of the canvas, work outward in circular motions. While the paint is wet, add Vandyke Brown and Black around the entire perimeter of the canvas. This creates a “vignette” effect, drawing the eye toward the center.
Step 2: Blending the Atmosphere
Use the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush to lightly sweep across the transitions where the red meets the black. Use circular motions to soften the edges, creating a hazy, dreamlike background. If the paint is too dry, use a heat gun to dry the layer completely before adding the next highlights.
Step 3: Creating the Central Light
With a clean Round Brush, dab a mixture of White and Lavender into the center “hole” of the painting. This represents the light source or a portal. Gently use the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush to blur the outer edges of this light into the surrounding reds.
Step 4: Painting the Main Tree
Switch to a medium Flat Brush. Using a mix of Black and Vandyke Brown, paint a thick tree trunk slightly to the right of the center. Use The Detailer Brush to pull out long, elegant branches that reach across the top and left sides of the canvas, framing the central light.
Step 5: Dabbing the Red Foliage
Using The Hedgehog (or a stipple brush), load it with a mix of Magenta and Bright Red. Dab leaf clusters along the branches and at the base of the tree. Focus the darker reds near the edges of the canvas and use lighter pinks (Red mixed with White) closer to the central light source to show depth.
Step 6: The Forest Path
Using a Flat Brush and a mixture of White and Lavender, paint horizontal, overlapping strokes leading from the bottom center toward the light portal. This creates a shimmering path or stream. Keep the strokes wider at the bottom and narrower as they approach the center to create perspective.
Step 7: Mist and Softening
Take the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush one more time. Lightly “feather” the bottom of the tree trunk and the edges of the path. This creates a low-hanging mist or ground fog that makes the forest feel more mystical and grounded.
Step 8: Magical Sparkles and Highlights
This is the final touch. Use The Detailer Brush with thin White paint. Add tiny dots along the path and scattered through the foliage. To create “stars” or sparkles, paint a small cross (+) over a few of the white dots. This adds a whimsical, magical quality to the scene.
Step 9: Final Signature
Sign your masterpiece in the corner using The Detailer Brush and a light color like Lavender or White.
Artist Tip: When dabbing the foliage with The Hedgehog, rotate your wrist with every tap. This prevents the leaves from looking like a repetitive pattern and makes the tree look more natural and organic.
