Before You Begin
- Prep Your Canvas: Dampen your canvas with clean water using a big soft brush or a mister. This helps acrylics stay workable and makes blending easier.
- Pre-moisten Your Palette: Use a water sprayer or lightly damp paper towel beneath your paint blobs to keep your acrylics from drying too fast.
- Keep Tools Ready: Gather a 4โ square brush, large oval brush, filbert brush, detailed square and round brushes, ultra-soft blending brush, palette knife, liner brush, and clean towels for wiping.
Essential Painting Tools
- 4โ Square Brush โ For large area coverage and blending backgrounds.
- Large Oval Brush โ Useful for soft blending and creating smooth transitions.
- Filbert Brush โ Great for softer edges and blending landforms and highlights.

- Clean Towels or Paper Towels โ For wiping brushes and removing excess moisture or paint during blending.

Enchanted Autumn Path: Step-by-Step Painting Guide
Journey into a sun-drenched forest where light breaks through a canopy of golden leaves. This tutorial focuses on the “glow” technique, creating deep forest depth with a misty, atmospheric transition leading to a rustic fence.
Materials Needed:
- Canvas: 12×14″
- Colors: White, Indian Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Vandyke Brown, Prussian Green, and Black.
- UR Art Studio Brushes:
- 2″ Big Oval Brush: For dabbing the central light and initial foliage shapes.
- Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush: For smoothing the misty background and creating light rays.
- Variety Set Flat Brush: For tree trunks and the wooden fence.
- The Hedgehog Stipple Brush: For textural leaf clusters and foreground shrubbery.
- The Detailer Brush: For fine branches and shimmering light reflections.
- Palette Knife: For sharp horizontal water/path highlights.
Step 1: The Central Glow
Begin by loading the 2″ Big Oval Brush with thick White and a touch of Indian Yellow. Dab a bright, circular area in the upper-center of the canvas. While wet, add Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna around this white center, working outward to establish a radiant light source.
Step 2: Framing the Deep Forest
Using the same 2″ Big Oval Brush, apply a mixture of Prussian Green, Vandyke Brown, and Black around the edges of the canvas. Use a dabbing motion to leave some texture. These dark tones will act as the deep shadows of the forest, making the center light appear more intense.
Step 3: Atmospheric Blending
Take the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush and lightly sweep from the bright center outward into the dark edges. Use very soft, circular motions to blur the transitions. Then, use vertical strokes at the bottom to indicate the reflection of light on a misty path or stream.
Step 4: Painting the Ancient Trunks
Switch to a medium Flat Brush. Using a dark mix of Black and Vandyke Brown, paint several vertical tree trunks. Place the largest trunks in the foreground (left and right) and smaller, fainter ones toward the center to create a sense of scale and perspective.
Step 5: Dabbing Autumnal Foliage
Load The Hedgehog Brush with Indian Yellow, Burnt Sienna, and a touch of Green. Dab leaf clusters onto the branches and at the base of the trees. To show light hitting the leaves, use the Big Oval Brush with a bright Yellow/White mix to highlight the inner edges of the foliage closest to the sun.
Step 6: The Misty Ground & Path
Use the Big Ultra Soft Blender Brush with a tiny amount of White paint. Lightly “feather” the base of the trees and the middle ground. This creates a low-hanging mist that separates the foreground from the background, adding to the enchanted feel.
Step 7: The Rustic Fence
With a small Flat Brush and Vandyke Brown, paint a simple wooden fence across the middle path. Once the structure is in place, use the Detailer Brush with a light Yellow to add highlights on the tops of the rails where the sunlight catches the wood.
Step 8: Sunlight on the Bark
Return to the main tree trunks with a Flat Brush. Mix White and Indian Yellow and apply a sharp vertical highlight along the side of the trunks facing the central light source. This “rim lighting” effect makes the trees look three-dimensional.
Step 9: Shimmering Water and Sparkles
If your path contains water, use the Palette Knife with White paint to pull thin, sharp horizontal lines. To finish, use The Detailer Brush to add tiny branches and magical “sparkles” (small white dots and crosses) in the brightest areas of the path and foliage.
Step 10: Signing Your Work
Sign your name in the corner using The Detailer Brush with a color that contrasts with the ground foliage.
Artist Tip: When creating the light source, don’t over-blend! Keeping some dabbing texture with the Big Oval Brush helps simulate the look of light filtering through thousands of individual leaves.
