STEP 1 – PREPARE YOUR CANVAS, COLORS AND PAINT BRUSHES

We use an 11×14″ primed and stretched canvas for this step-by-step instructions. However, you can use any size of canvas you are comfortable with.

The first thing we need to accomplish is to properly prepare our canvas to ensure our acrylic paint stays moist for a more extended period. This will help us in 2 critical ways. First, it is much easier to add colors to your canvas when it is moist. Second, it will allow us to blend colors to achieve a very soft color transition without visible brush strokes. For more details on this, please follow this link to see how to prepare your canvas properly.

Choose acrylic colors you’d like to work with on your painting composition. Limit your color pallet to a few primary colors to make it easier on yourself.

Next, prepare the paint brushes that will get you through this project. Be sure to have clean and dry paper towels and rags to dry the brushes. To wash the paintbrushes, use clean water. I always have a bucket of clean water nearby that I constantly use to clean my paint brushes between each blending application.
